What kind of climate can I expect in Greece?

In Greece there is a predominantly Mediterranean climate. In the dry summer season between May and September, temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius occur. In July and August the temperature can rise to 40 ° C. Precipitation rarely occurs during this time. However, heat thunderstorms can occasionally occur. In winter there is more precipitation, but the weather remains rather mild. The summer months in particular offer ideal conditions for Greece.

What are the sailing conditions and special features in Greece?

Water depths and tides around the various bases
In the Saronic Gulf and the Cyclades, the tidal range is so small that it can be neglected. In addition, the water level in this area is influenced more by the wind than by the tides.
In the Ionian Sea, too, the tidal range of 0.1 to 0.5 meters is negligible. The surface current flows counterclockwise north along the coast.
It then turns west and then flows south along the Italian coast. During the entire course, the current is rarely stronger than one to one and a half knots. Only in the narrow sea channels, such as in Preveza, can it rise to up to three knots.
In the eastern Mediterranean, the sea level is generally more influenced by the wind than the tides. In addition, the air pressure has an impact on the water depth. The following applies: high air pressure and offshore wind lower the sea level, low air pressure and onshore wind cause it to rise.

Wind conditions in Greece and the islands

The wind system called Meltemi predominates in the eastern Mediterranean. Especially in the Cyclades, Sporades and the Dodecanese in the summer months, this causes strong periods with four to six wind speeds, which are particularly noticeable during the day. In the evening the Meltemi usually subsides. On particularly stormy days, however, it can sometimes reach strengths between six and eight Beaufort, which are then also noticeable at night. These strong winds can last up to three days. The wind coming from the northwest makes the area a demanding sailing area to rent a yacht in Greece.
Particular attention should be paid to the strong gusts of fall on the leeward side of the islands, which blow over the anchor bays, as well as cape and jet effects on the island sides or between them.
The Ionian Sea is a little quieter and more stable. The charter area is dominated by the thermals. Still rather weak in the morning, the wind does not set in with the rising sun until around noon. Here it can reach up to five Beaufort. From 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. there is usually a lull.

Formal Greece

In Greece and on the islands that belong to it, you need a sea sports boat license or the SKS / BR license to drive a yacht. In addition, a second crew member must have a sailing license or proof of experience.
